The beginning of the gods: how it all started
In the beginning there was Chaos. Chaos was the first entity in existence, and every other god and goddess was born out of her. First Eros, the god of love, then Tartarus, the original god of the Underworld, Gaea came next, she was the personification of Earth. Erebus, the the god of darkness and Nyx, the goddess of night were born, both from Chaos.
Then there was Ourea, god of mountains, Pontus, god of the sea (What about Poseidon? we'll meet him later, don't worry) and Uranus, the god of the heavens, all born from Gaea.
Then Uranus and Gaea had children together. Gaea gave birth to three Hecatoncheires (Hundred handed ones) they were huge giants, with fifty heads. Three Cyclopes, giants with one eye in the middle of their foreheads. And the twelve titans: Oceanus, the god of the Oceanus river and all freshwater on earth, Coeus, the god of the inquisitive mind, Hyperion, god of heavenly light and watchfulness, Iapetus, god of mortality, Kronos, god of time, Theia, goddess of prophecy and sight, Rhea, goddess of fertility, motherhood, fertility, childbirth, comfort, and good living. Themis, goddess of justice, Mnemosyne, goddess of stories, Phoebe, goddess of intellect and prophecy, and Tethys, the goddess of freshwater (alongside her brother and husband Oceanus.)
Uranus was a bad husband, and a terrible father. He hated the Hecatoncheires, so he pushed them into hidden places on earth (Gaea's womb)
Gaea was furious. She made a sickle out of flint and tried to convince her children to kill Uranus. None of them agreed, except Kronos. So Gaea and Kronos made a plan to ambush Uranus. As Uranus slept next to Gaea, Kronos grabbed him and cut him into pieces. (yes, I know, gross) His blood fell onto the ground and created the Meliae (ash-tree nymphs) the giants, and the Furies (more about them later) Then Kronos threw the pieces of Uranus into the sea, creating sea foam from which Aphrodite (goddess of beauty and love) stepped out.
Kronos then became king, married his sister, Rhea, and had six children: The Olympians
Well, that's it for today, but I'll keep posting more to continue this myth every day. I hope this was helpful, and come back to find out what happens next!
